The market is better than it has ever been. At the time of this post the unemployment rate was 3.78 percent. Even if you aren’t looking for a new job, you should be listening to what’s going on because it’s an amazing time if you are even considering making a move.

Recruiters know these statistics very well and it’s something that we review and revel in each time they are released. We can loathe them just as much in a high unemployment rate scenario. Keeping your ear to the ground in a time such as this, is one of the smartest things you can do in order to secure the job that you want vs. accepting a job that you don’t want but have to take because there are fewer options.
There are thousands of staffing firms, agencies, consulting companies, etc., who would love an email from you and gladly put you through their paces today – if you let them. How do you get started? It’s 100% your choice when deciding the best person(s) for you to align yourself with, as it could be a life changing decision. Check their references, scan the web for good or bad feedback on both the recruiter and the company they work for, and ask if they have any networking events so you can get a feel for their energy.
Pay attention to their presence in the market through social activity on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and job boards. The loudest are not always the best. Look for track records in your market. How long have they been in the industry? How long have they been with their current company? Some recruiters have 20+ years of experience, but it’s spread out over 10+ companies. If they aren’t investing in their own career, chances are they won’t invest in yours!
Things you should expect from your recruiter:
- You should be their top priority.
- They should call you and call you back.
- Provide honest feedback so you can change your game if needed.
- Respect your time.
- Show you what they have available and let you choose vs. choosing for you.
- Don’t assume that you’re not interested in something that is out of range.
- Respect your references.
- Provide an accurate description of the job in a timely manner.
- Negotiate and be honest with you if they think it’s possible or not based on what you need.
The key is listening to what the market is saying and reacting in a timely manner. Take your time and expect only the best from your recruiter. It’s OK to move onto another one if you’re not aligning in your needs.
