How to Leverage Social Media in the Job Search

In this increasingly digital age, the internet is social media and social media is the internet. If you aren’t using your digital tools to their fullest potential, you could be leaving yourself out of countless opportunities. Professionally speaking, I can’t stress enough the importance of leveraging social media in your job search. There are various channels that you can utilize in both your personal and professional life, but I recommend focusing on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook when looking for that next step in your career.

  1. LinkedIn
    • If you are searching for a job, having an accurate and completed profile is crucial. Both employers and recruiters will search your profile to get a better idea of who you are in your work life. I would recommend setting up your LinkedIn with a professional photo of yourself, not a bathroom selfie. As important as it is to make yourself searchable, don’t forget that you can also operate LinkedIn to actively search jobs for you. If you find a job posting that you’re interested in, don’t submit your resume to that posting. Instead, take the time to find people who work in HR at that company and send your resume directly to them.
  2. Twitter
    • Depending on the industry that you work in, I would also use Twitter. I recruit in the tech space, so a lot of the connections I make with people happen on Twitter. Start replying and interacting with people. You never know where the conversation could lead. If you connect with those people, you can direct message them to see if they are hiring!
  3. Facebook
    • Make sure you clean up your Facebook. If there are things on your Facebook page that could be potentially perceived as questionable by a future employer, I would delete them. If you wouldn’t want your grandma to see it, don’t post it. This sounds like common sense, but I know of countless times where a candidate has risked losing a job offer due to something questionable that was found on his/her account. Recruiters and employers will check you out to get an idea of who you are holistically since so much of hiring these days revolves around finding the right culture fit, not just skill fit.

During your job search, you want to be sure you’re putting your best foot forward in all aspects. Neglecting social media could be a huge detriment to you ending up with the job of your dreams. Have fun with it, but be smart!
