Preparation is half the battle when it comes to job interviews. The quickest way to get dismissed by a potential employer is not knowing anything about the company, the job, or what you bring to the table. You could be the most qualified, but if you’re so overconfident that you don’t do your research, you might just strike out. If you have a tech interview coming up and you’re ready to hit a home run, here are three steps you can take to prepare for your interview:
Learn as much as you can about the company you are interviewing with.
Know what they do and get an understanding of how they are utilizing technology. A good way to find a high-level summary of a company is LinkedIn. If the company has an official LinkedIn page, you can click “About” and it should give you a summary of what they do and the people who work there. If you want to really dig into the technology, look at some of the profiles of current employees that are in similar roles to the one you are interviewing for.
Fully understand the role you’re interviewing for.
If you’re working with a recruiter, have them explain why the company is hiring and if they are trying to solve a specific problem by bringing you on. After learning about the role, be sure to have talking points around what makes you a good fit for the position and how you can help the company accomplish its goals. If you have specific questions that your recruiter can’t answer for you, ask those questions during your tech interview.
Prepare to tell your story.
Keep this professional and to the point. How did you get to where you are today? Why are you looking to leave your current role? Why did you leave past roles? What hobbies and interests do you have outside of work? What are your future goals (make sure these align with the role you are interviewing for)? Tech professionals get a bad rap for not communicating clearly, so preparing your story, knowing what you’re going to say, and telling it concisely could set you apart from the competition.
Confidently walking into an interview with knowledge of the company, awareness of what you’d be doing in the role, and the ability to tell your story in a way that proves your value set you up for success. Interviewing for tech roles is similar to interviewing for any other role; you just have to do your homework to better understand how the company is both utilizing technology and functioning as a cog in the tech world.
