All Vaconians [Vaco employees] live by a set of core tenets that drive our culture and shape the way we work. Kyle Allen, Vaco’s Nashville Managing Partner, sat down with some of the outstanding people at the office who exemplify each of the core tenets. In this feature, we see how Lucia Marley embodies the tenet, “fix the problem, not the blame.”
What does this core tenet mean to you?
I think it is really easy to blame someone or something else for what goes wrong. There are SO many factors both internally and externally that can cause something to fall apart. When this happens, you have to make a choice; are you going to sulk about something that is outside of your control or are you going to take a look in the mirror and truly ask yourself how you contributed to the problem and what you can do to fix it.
If you could summarize this core tenet in one sentence, what would it be?
Before pointing a finger at someone or something, be sure to look around and most importantly, in the mirror to identify the problem and work on that first.
How would you describe this core tenet to someone who doesn’t work at Vaco?
Rather than spending time and energy figuring out who to blame, spend that time trying to solve to problem.
How do you think this core tenet has led to Vaco’s success over the years?
While it is much easier to point fingers at someone or something, ultimately that is unproductive. This core tenet has contributed to Vaco’s success because we are always pushing to better ourselves and always asking what we could have done better in a given situation.
How do you apply this core tenet to your day-to-day life at Vaco?
I always try to keep moving forward. Looking backwards only leads to finger pointing which ultimately isn’t productive or helpful. Learning from the past and how you can do better, making those adjustments, and then moving forward has certainly led to more success than laying blame.
How do you think this core tenet differentiates Vaco from other recruiting and staffing agencies?
This core tenet allows Vaconians to put their focus on the partnerships they have with their candidates and clientsover pointing fingers; which means, when there is an issue
, we go right to solving the problem as quickly as possible.
Name one famous person (dead or alive) who you think exemplifies this mentality?
The late Kobe Bryant once said, “I have nothing in common with lazy people who blame others for their lack of success. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses.” Kobe Bryant really exemplified this mentality because he lived it every day. Once you realize that you are the only one who controls your success, you can start to be successful.
