“What am I doing with my life?” A letter to the college grad

Happy college graduate celebrating

As college graduation quickly approached, I was often asked, “So, what’s next? Do you have a job yet?” Whether you have a plan or not, those aren’t comfortable questions to answer. During my time as an undergraduate student, I interned for six different organizations, ranging from nonprofits, political campaigns, and for-profits before I landed at Vaco.

Early on in my final semester of school, Vaco’s office manager reached out to me, but I hadn’t heard of the company before, and I didn’t even know what a Talent Solutions Firm was. Even after accepting their offer to intern with the Nashville marketing team to then joining the team full-time as their event coordinator, I still didn’t really know what Vaco did. Now, I’ve been here for just under two months, have received multiple other job offers and decided to reject them because the culture at Vaco is unmatched. I love the people I work with; I love what I do, and I love knowing that the work I’m doing is helping to further Vaco’s mission to ease the pressure off people as they search for the next step in their careers.

I’m here to say: it’s okay to not have a plan. And it’s okay if you have a plan and life does a complete 180 on you. That happened to me, but it’s been such a positive experience. Post-grad, I planned to move to Washington, D.C. and work at a nonprofit or on the Hill, but instead, I’m in Nashville at Vaco, helping people “free themselves” from the exhausting job search by providing insight on how a great recruiter can transform the experience for the better. Twenty-two and right out of school is a prime time for uncertainties, but if that makes you anxious, visit Vaco. We go above and beyond to match people’s skills and personalities to the right job with the right culture. Vaco helps anyone from entry-level to C-Suite positions.

That said, congratulations!!! It’s a huge accomplishment to graduate from college. You’re among the top 33% of the United States. Breathe. The right job will come; you will get into grad school; people will eventually stop asking you what’s next. It’s your life, be free. Don’t settle on the first job that comes your way just because you need a job. It’s okay to be a little picky if you’re realistic. But at the same time, have an open mind. It’s not all about money. Culture, benefits, and the people you work with matter more than a high dollar price tag – so I’ve learned.

They say college is the best four years of your life, but that doesn’t have to be true for you. Seize your life and let your light shine. You’ve got this. #ThriveOn
