Office Party Etiquette

It’s that time of year again. The leaves have fallen, and the smells of eggnog and pine fill the air. Your office is likely decorated for the season and no matter which channel on the radio you flip to, you’re sure to hear some jolly tune.

To celebrate a year of achievements and to commemorate the holidays, many companies hold an annual holiday party. Whether it’s your first company party or your 10th, here are a few tips to think about when headed to mix and mingle. Special thanks to Vaconian, Liz Schimmer, for her helpful holiday party tips.

Show Up:

As your office grows, this is always a great opportunity to meet or start-up a conversation with someone that is not in your department. Go out of your way to introduce yourself to a new coworker or someone you haven’t had a chance to talk to in the office. Even more importantly, if you say you’re going to attend, make sure you do.

Festive Attire:

Make sure to choose an outfit that is both festive and tasteful. For example, our Nashville team gives everyone the option to wear either a tacky sweater or that new outfit that’s been saved for a special occasion. It is always best to be cognizant of the fact that you will be in the presence of colleagues, executives as well as their significant others and plus ones.

Don’t Forget to Eat:

It’s easy to forget to eat when you are mingling and having a good time at the party, but make sure you eat at some point in the night. Not eating could lead to trouble down the line if alcohol is involved.

Work Hard, Stay Free:

This is one of our Vaco Core Tenets that we love to live by. You work hard all year, so it’s a great time to celebrate your successes from the year and free yourself — in moderation of course.

Show Your Appreciation:

A lot goes into organizing the corporate holiday party. Whether it’s the planning aspect, party prep and setup, or approval of the budget from executive leadership, it’s always nice to give a shout out for planning the party and allowing us an occasion for some general revelry.  If you’re not sure who was involved, or you don’t see them at the party, you can always follow up with an email of appreciation the next day.
