In this edition of Free Yourself Friday, we take you to Richmond, Virginia, or as the local Vaconians call it, RVA, where Vaco has provided expert consulting, permanent placement, executive search, and strategic staffing since 2004.

Yes, we specialize in premier talent & solutions, but most importantly, we help people find freedom. We believe in the power of an entrepreneurial spirit, staying team focused, and a true work-life balance.

So, if you find yourself in RVA on business or just for a visit, our local VA Vaconians have the top five places to Free Yourself in Richmond.

  1. Sports

Richmond, Virginia (RVA) has several leagues that offer sports for all levels and they usually include a beer or three afterwards at different bar sponsors around town! Your usual sports are offered, but we also have kickball, wiffleball, Skee-Ball, and axe throwing. Richmond is also a great place to watch professional teams like the Richmond Kickers, Flying Squirrels, Richmond RoughRiders, NASCAR, and even the Redskins Training Camp!

  1. Beer Scene

Like craft beers? Don’t worry, Richmond has you covered. Rated as No. 1 in Craft Breweries per capita last year, RVA comes locked and loaded with over 25 breweries in the area headlined by The Veil, Väsen, Ardent, Triple Crossing, and Hardywood. To keep up with the cider trend, it boasts a few cideries including Blue Bee and Buskey. Finally, walk down the street and polish off the night with a few arcade games at The Circuit Bar or bowling at River City Roll.

  1. Music

The National is a historic theater in Richmond. Along the 700 blocks of Broad Street, once known as Theatre Row, is the only surviving auditorium on the row. The broad range of artists that play at this venue makes The National a great place to watch your favorite band or artist in an intimate setting.

  1. Food

Why save room for dessert when you can make dessert the main attraction! Shyndigz is a 100% made from scratch bakery in the Fan District of Richmond, specializing in Chocolate Salted Caramel Cake, Bread Pudding, Fresh Fruit Cake and a selection of other tasty treats! Check them out on Wednesday nights for “Wine Down Wednesdays” (two pieces of cake come free with the purchase of a bottle of wine). They’ve been rated Best Bakery, Best Cake, Best Service, Best Dessert in the State, and several other accolades. Is cake not your style? Check out their breakfast spot next door, The Fancy Biscuit, and enjoy a decadent meal specially crafted for the morning hours—mimosa flights anyone?

  1. The Great Outdoors

Richmond offers unlimited options for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. It was voted “The Best River Town in America” by the readers of Outside Magazine. The James River and its surrounding park system is the city’s outdoor crown jewel where you can canoe, paddle board, mountain bike through challenging trails, fish, and whitewater raft. Contact Riverside Outfitters for a guided whitewater rafting trip for a great day of adventure on the water. Your guide will help you safely run the only Class IV rapids within the city limits of a major U.S. city.
