After a decade of hiring and managing employees as a retail professional and executive, Tori has a talent and passion for finding the right person for the right job. With a thoughtful and discerning approach to recruiting, she takes the time to fully understand her client’s needs and align those needs with the right candidate. When she’s not working she keeps a busy schedule as a mother, wife, and spin instructor.
What characteristics and disciplines do you need to be successful in your role at a staffing firm?
Empathy is absolutely necessary in this job. You must be able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and understand how to work as a resource for where they are in life. Maybe someone just wants a change of pace, maybe someone needs to be more fulfilled at work, or someone was just laid off; you have to be able to feel the emotions that people are having and let that be your motivating factor in finding them a new career.
What is your role at Vaco, and what do you do?
I work with job seekers to help them find their next career move. I work with businesses to help them find hard-working staff. It’s a win-win.
What’s the secret to a great interview?
Confidence with humility. Show your true self without crossing any professional boundaries. If you have a sense of humor, let that show in your interview. Be who you are while also speaking very pointedly to your experience and your goals.
What’s the most important piece of professional/career advice you’ve ever received?
When I first started at Vaco, I was so scared to make a mistake. This was a new industry for me, and I wanted to impress everyone. On my second day, my amazing team lead (Sandra Shugart) came to me and said “You have to be okay with making mistakes. It’s the only way that you will learn. We will be here to commiserate with you in the losses and celebrate the wins.” Having this support gave me the confidence to do my job better.
How would you describe the work environment at Vaco compared to other recruiting agencies?
I think the culture and work environment at Vaco is not just different from other recruiting agencies, it’s different from any other job or industry PERIOD. This is a very unique work environment where Work Hard, Play Hard is the key. I’ve never seen an office have more fun together while also working their butts off. It’s very special.
