Taylor has been recruiting for nine years having met over 4,000+ engineers/developers at this point in his career. He has also found 450+ of those individuals their dream jobs. He was elected VP of the .NET User Group (the second largest user group in Nashville) for 3 years and has presented at 20’ish code conferences across the southeast most notably at Code on the Beach (Jacksonville), Music City Code (Nashville), and Codestock (Knoxville).Taylor has helped scale teams internally at Vaco up to 3x their initial size with his current team going from seven to twenty four individuals as well as going from $2 million in revenue to over $6 million. He has also spoken at Vaco’s Global Conference on branding/marketing, and currently leads a team of nine recruiters.
What is the most rewarding part of being a tech recruiter?
I get the chance to not only find someone their dream job, but I have a chance to help their lifetime financial goals, family goals, and career goals. It’s much more than just finding someone a job. It’s the fact you could change the candidate and their family’s lives.
What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career at a staffing agency?
This is really hard because I want to say YOU NEED TO LOVE PEOPLE AND BE A PEOPLE PERSON AND LOVE TALKING. But believe it or not, I’m not always a people person and sometimes not as social depending on part of the day (I need coffee first). But I would say you need a competitive edge. At the end of the day, our business is sales driven; so you need to be driven to be successful. You need to be able to read people within 15 seconds and be able to build a relationship with someone in a minute. Also, you need to be able to deploy empathy in every interaction with your team and candidates.
What is your role at Vaco, and what do you do?
My role is Sr. Recruiter Advocate/Managing Director, and I do quite a few things! I speak at code conferences across the southeast (most notably Music City Code, Codestock, Little Rock Tech Fest, and Code on the Beach) on how to navigate working with recruiters in the job market. I manage a team of 10 recruiters, and I still try to find time to meet and work with all types of developers in Nashville from the backend to the front end. If you have a developer title, I want to be your friend :). I also run a podcast (Guidance Counselor 2.0), organize a MeetUp (Lunch IT), and put out a ton of content on all social media sites on how to find a job!
What is something you can do better than anyone else you know?
I can meet any developer and know within a minute if they are a good fit for the job I am working on.
We know Vaco is your dream job, but if you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
I moved up to Nashville in 2011 to pursue music. I am a drummer and would love to be a touring musician if I wasn’t at Vaco. I miss music like crazy, and it will always be a passion of mine!
What is one thing you enjoyed learning since joining Vaco?
I’ve learned who I really am! I know this is kind of crazy to say, but being in this industry for so long it kind of has a way of making you realize what is important to you, what you are good at, and what you are weak at.
