How would you describe recruiting agencies to a third grader?
Recruiting is like playing a game of connect the dots, but the dots are people. It’s fun because sometimes the dots don’t know they want to be connected or don’t want to be connected at all, and I have to try and change their minds.
What is the most rewarding part about working for a recruiting agency?
We legitimately get to change people’s lives for the better on a daily basis. We are presenting people with life-altering opportunities. There is no better feeling in the world than getting that call or note from a candidate you placed thanking you for what you did and then telling you the impact it has had on their lives (and this happens years down the road sometimes). My favorite thing is building relationships with the people I placed who then become friends and whose life and achievements I get to celebrate along with them and their family and friends.
What’s the secret to a great interview?
Just be yourself. Let your personality shine through. People want to work with people they like and can get along with. Answer the questions asked, and tell a story.
What’s the most important piece of professional/career advice you’ve ever received?
Treat others how you would like to be treated. This is the guiding principle that I use in every interaction that I have.
We know Vaco is your dream job, but if you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
I would love to be a motivational speaker. I just have not found the subject that people will pay me a lot of money and fly me all over the world to talk about yet.
What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn?
I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano. I have had the opportunity on more than one occasion but have just never done it.
